Side Effects of BCG Vaccine

A local reaction is normal until a shallow ulcer covered with a crust form. This heals in about 12 weeks and may leave a 2-10mm tiny scar.

A Mantoux test is sometimes required first for all patients aged 6 years old and over.  This establishes whether the patient has aquaired any natural immunity to Tuberculosis.

The Mantoux (skin) test has to be examined 48-72 hours after administration and therefore cannot be accommodated in our usual Saturday clinics. We will run a quarterly Mantoux Test Clinic.

Tuberculin PPD RT 23 is used for Mantoux tuberculin skin testing.
